Opening of Attualità Indonesiane at Il Ramo D’Oro, Naples
Yesterday was the opening night of the show “Attualità Indonesiane” at Il Ramo D’Oro in Naples, Italy, featuring artists Balinese artists Made Bayak, Gede Suanda and Naples-based Setyo Mardiyantoro. It was a successful and interesting night where people from many different background come together to learn about art making in Indonesia and the value of art in helping to grow awareness. The interesting thing about il Ramo D’Oro is its non-elitist approach. Gallerist Vincenzo Montella doesn’t want his space to be accessible only by vernissage hoppers, but rather to people from every walk of life.
Made Bayak had just arrived in the morning all the way from Bali, wearing an awesome outfit. It was great to have Made with us, and participating to the presentation, answering the public’s many questions about his work and ongoing project “Plasticology”. Vincenzo Montella, Antonia Soriente – professor of Indonesian art and literature at L’Orientale University – Giuseppe Testa – the honorary consul of Indonesia in Naples – and I also had the floor, highlighting different aspects of the show.
As expected, people in Naples were very sensitive to the theme of the environment and reuse of wastage, as a few years ago the city faced this kind of emergency – dubbed “Emergenza rifiuti” by the media. The audience kept on asking Made about his community-based practice even after the talk, and how to implement a similar project in their own neighborhood.
The exhibition “Attualità Indonesiane” will run until January 14. If you are in Naples I highly recommend to visit it. Here’s my curatorial text for the show. And now for a few pictures from the opening night.
